He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”
Gospel's Commentary
Today we are attending a farewell meal: Jesus is about to ascend to Heaven. When they have finished He holds a special, intimate, conversation with Simon Peter. The three times Jesus asks him whether he loved Him remind us the three times that Peter - during the Passion - said that he did not know Jesus ...
—Any other "boss" would have dismissed Peter ... But the merciful Christ understands him, forgives him and reinstates him in his mission: "Feed my sheep." In spite of my mistakes, God counts on me!
