Parables of Jesus: The mustard seed and the yeast

Today Jesus reveals something of God’s “psychology” to us. It can all be summed up in the “mustard seed.” It is the smallest of all seeds—tiny, almost invisible—but when it takes root and grows, it becomes a shrub capable of giving shade to everyone. And it grows step by step, without making noise. That sounds strange because we human beings tend toward “a lot of noise and very little substance.” Yet the “silent” God, the “hidden” God, acts like the seed… —The Blessed Virgin Mary: young, unknown, from an even less-known village… “All generations will call me blessed”: Lourdes, Fatima… All of them—she and those she has chosen—small, insignificant, and yet what a great stir of holiness! That is how God acts.
