Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted and you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
Gospel's Commentary
Today Jesus is 40 days old. Mary and Joseph take Him to the Temple to present Him to God, as the Law required. Yesterday, on the 14th, Jesus told Nicodemus in advance that the Son of Man had to be “lifted up.” Today the Blessed Virgin Mary learns something more about this “lifting up”: it will be a path of suffering that will also reach her personally (“a sword will pierce your own soul”).
