August 10th: Feast of Saint Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr
Gospel text Jn 12:24-26
Jesus said: “Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.”
Gospel's Commentary
Today we admire the serenity with which St. Lawrence faced his martyrdom, in the year 258. Those were times of persecution. Pope St. Sixtus was martyred. Lawrence was one of the deacons serving the Pope. He was concerned with helping the poor in Rome. The authorities granted him three days to gather the riches of the Church and hand them over to the Emperor. But, oh surprise! St. Lawrence appeared with a long line of poor, crippled, blind and those who were suffering... those which he attended to, and declared that these were the true treasures of the Church!
-21 centuries later, the treasures of Christ have not changed ... We are the ones who should change!
