He loved the poor as the great treasure of the Church

He loved the poor as the great treasure of the Church
August 10th: Feast of Saint Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr
Gospel text
Jn 12:24-26
Jesus said: “Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.”
Gospel's Commentary
Today we admire the serenity with which Saint Lawrence faced martyrdom in the year 258. These were times of persecution. Pope Saint Sixtus was martyred. Lawrence was one of the deacons who assisted the Pope. He was responsible for helping the poor of Rome. The authorities gave him three days to gather the riches of the Church and hand them over to the Emperor. But what a surprise! Saint Lawrence appeared with a long line of beggars, poor people, the sick, the disabled… all those whom he cared for. Here are the treasures of the Church! —Twenty-one centuries later, Christ’s treasures have not changed… We are the ones who should change!
