Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
Gospel's Commentary
Today we celebrate Saint Bartholomew (Nathanael), one of the Twelve Apostles. How things turn out! Nathanael made quite a blunder by speaking badly about Nazareth, the town of the Virgin Mary. But Jesus welcomed him with the greatest kindness: “Here is a true Israelite.” What praise! That is how kind God is! Nathanael does not know Jesus: he does not even know where He was born. Jesus, however, knows Nathanael—and knows him thoroughly!
—Philip gave him excellent advice: “Come and see.” Nathanael went, saw, and “surrendered”: “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.” It took very little for him to “surrender” to God. And you? Do you need a lot?
