Jesus appoints Peter as the first Pope of the Church

Jesus appoints Peter as the first Pope of the Church
Thursday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel text
Mt 16:13-23
Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church."
Gospel's Commentary
Today Jesus asks the Apostles if they know who He is. As always, Peter jumps in, and this time he gets it exactly right—it is clear that he has received inspiration from Heaven: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And with that, Peter receives the primacy of the Church… He is the first Pope! —It is worth “challenging” Jesus: no one can outdo Him in generosity!
