December 7th: Memorial of Saint Ambrose, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
Gospel text Jn 10,11-16
«I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep (…)».
Gospel's Commentary
Today we admire the prestige of Ambrose (c. 340-397). His election was unusual: he went directly from prefect of the city to bishop. The election of the new bishop of Milan was complicated, as there were factions and division... They called the city's police, with Ambrose at the helm, to ensure order. Ambrose was preparing to receive baptism... In a moment of heated discussion, a voice was heard: "Ambrose, bishop!" The applause was unanimous, and he had no choice but to accept. Within a few days, he received baptism and holy orders.
—Ambrose became the most distinguished bishop of Milan. He left a theological and spiritual legacy that endures in the Church.
