October 9th: Memorial of Saint John Henry Newman, priest and cardinal
Gospel text Mt 13:47-52
Jesus said to the disciples (...): “Every scribe who has been instructed in the Kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”
Gospel's Commentary
Today we celebrate Saint John Henry Newman, priest and cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was born in London. After studying at Oxford University, he became an Anglican priest. A few years later, having read and consider it a lot, he converted to Catholicism, in 1845. Two years later he was ordained into the Catholic Church and consacrated cardinal.
Newman distinguished himself as a great scholar and writer on many questions of philosophy and theology of his time. He was in love with the truth. He read very carefully the writings of the oldest Fathers and authors of Christianity.
—Saint John Henry also dedicated himself to pray a lot and, as a good shepherd, he did not save time in caring for the sick and disadvantaged in the place where he lived.
