September 3rd: Memorial of Saint Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church
Gospel text Lk 22,24-30
«I am among you as the one who serves».
Gospel's Commentary
Today we are moved by the generosity and spirit of service of this great Pope, who, being young, became prefect (mayor) of Rome. Gregory stood out for order and discipline. He left that task to lead a monk's life, devoting himself to prayer with Christ and to reading the Bible. However, his love for God aroused his concern for caring for people. Chosen as bishop of Rome, Gregory worked for the defense of the city against the violent invasions of the Longobards. He sought peace and evangelization of the invaders. He also did the same at the European level. In addition, he organized the social assistance of many poor and hungry people, in the midst of that environment of invasions.
—Pope Gregory signed with the title of “servant of the servants”. Since then, the Roman pontiffs have used this title. All of us should imitate this willingness to serve our brothers!
