August 20th: Memorial of Saint Bernard, Abbot and Doctor of the Church
Gospel text Jn 17,20-26
Jesus said, «As I revealed your Name to them (...) so that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I also may be in them».
Gospel's Commentary
Today is the feast of St. Bernard. At 25 (with only 3 monks) he was sent to found a new convent, Clairvaux. Then, during his life he founded more than 300 convents (he had an incredible gift to attract others to monastic life). He toured all of Europe and exchanged letters with many of people, bringing peace and fighting heresies firmly. He became the most famous man in Europe. Among his writings stands out those about the Blessed Virgin Mary to whom he professed great devotion and love.
- For St Bernard there is only one name that counts, that of Jesus Nazarene: "What you write has no savour for me unless I have read Jesus in it."
