Cistercian monk, theologian, and preacher of Marian love

Today is the feast of Saint Bernard (1090–1153). At the age of 25 (after only three years as a monk), he was sent to found a new monastery at Clairvaux. During his lifetime, more than 300 monasteries were subsequently founded (he had an extraordinary gift for attracting others to monastic life). He traveled throughout Europe and corresponded with countless people, working to bring peace and firmly opposing heresies. He became the most famous man in Europe. Among his writings, those dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary stand out, reflecting his deep devotion and love for her. —For Saint Bernard, only one name truly matters, that of Jesus of Nazareth: "When you argue or speak, it has no taste for me if I do not hear the name of Jesus resound therein."
