June 28th: Memorial of Saint Irenaeus, Bishop, Martyr and Doctor of the Church
Gospel text Jn 17,20-26
Jesus said, «I pray not only for these but also for those who through their word will believe in me. May they all be one as you Father are in me and I am in you. May they be one in us; so the world may believe that you have sent me».
Gospel's Commentary
Today is the feast of Saint Irenaeus of Lyon (135/140-202). He was born in Smyrna (now Turkey). From Asia Minor, he moved to Europe, settling in Lyon, France. In 177, the community sent him to Rome to seek the opinion of Pope Eleutherius on certain doctrinal deviations. Since then, he devoted himself to refuting heretical doctrines (errors about the faith). Upon returning to Lyon, he was acclaimed as bishop, dedicating himself to spreading the Gospel through his preaching and example.
—He became the moderator and peacemaker, a recognized authority throughout France and the entire Church.
