March 18th: Memorial of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, bishop and doctor of the Church
Gospel text Jn 15:1-8
Jesus said to his disciples: "I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit."
Gospel's Commentary
Today we celebrate St. Cyril of Jerusalem (313-386). He stood out as a great theologian, pastor, preacher, and author of major works that clearly explained Christian doctrine. Over two decades, St. Cyril endured three exiles: the first in 357, when he was deposed by a Synod of Jerusalem; the second in 360, by the actions of Acacius (bishop of Caesarea); and the third, the longest —lasting eleven years— in 367 by order of Emperor Valens.
—We have preserved twenty-four famous catecheses from St. Cyril, which he delivered as bishop around the year 350. In one of them, he emphasizes that the transformation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ is real and not merely symbolic.
