January 2nd: Memorial of Saints Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen, Bishops and Doctors of the Church
Gospel text Mt 23:8-12
Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying, “Do not be called ‘Master’; you have but one master, the Messiah."
Gospel's Commentary
Today we celebrate these two saints (4th century) together because they were united by an exemplary friendship and great theological work. Saint Basil the Great and Saint Gregory of Nazianzus were bishops and Doctors of the Church, belonging to the "Cappadocian Fathers" (from the region of Cappadocia). To them, no name was more important than that of Jesus Christ, and united in Him, they shared everything; their only competition was in mutual service. Their deep piety and profound study enabled them to firmly defend that Jesus is fully God while distinct from the Father.
—The Holy Trinity: here is the great mystery! It is not meant to be solved like a puzzle but rather contemplated, as Basil and Gregory did.
