Jesus teaches us that the law of love is above compliance with the rules

Jesus teaches us that the law of love is above compliance with the rules
Saturday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel text
Mt 9:14-17
The disciples of John approached Jesus and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?”
Gospel's Commentary
Today Jesus teaches us that we must not “fast for the sake of fasting,” as though we were merely fulfilling a rule. “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them?” That is the point: above “observance” stands the law of love (charity). Can you imagine yourself fasting at a wedding? —The saints are not boring people: they know there is a time to fast and a time to celebrate. They also keep in mind the deepest meaning of fasting: to accompany Jesus on the Cross. —How long has it been since I spent time at Calvary?
