Jesus teaches us that the law of love is above compliance with the rules

Jesus teaches us that the law of love is above compliance with the rules
Saturday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel text
Mt 9:14-17
The disciples of John approached Jesus and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?”
Gospel's Commentary
Today, Jesus teaches us that we do not have to "fast just for fasting", as if we were to comply with a standard. "Can the guests at the wedding be sad while the bridegroom is with them?" That is the question: above "compliance" there is the law of love (charity). Can you imagine yourself fasting at a wedding? "Saints are not boring types: they know there are times to fast and times to celebrate. Also, bear in mind the deeper meaning of fasting: to accompany Jesus on the Cross. "How long has it been since I passed last through Calvary?"
