Jesus chooses Matthew: "I did not come to call the righteous but sinners"

Jesus chooses Matthew: "I did not come to call the righteous but sinners"
Friday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel text
Mt 9:9-13
As Jesus passed by, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.
Gospel's Commentary
Today we share the joy of Matthew and his friends: Jesus has chosen him! Everyone is happy and they celebrate it with a meal with the Master. But are they all happy? No, because the usual “killjoys" - with their usual prejudices - cannot bear to see the Master eating with "sinners". —"But who am I to say that others are" sinners "? In any case, the doctor is needed by those who are weak: "I desire mercy (...). For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners. "
