The Sermon on the Mount: Jesus asks us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us

The Sermon on the Mount: Jesus asks us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us
Saturday of the First Week of Lent
Gospel text
Mt 5:43-48
Jesus said to his disciples, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father."
Gospel's Commentary
Today the Lord continues with His teaching about the style of love God expects from us. He who has a good heart loves everybody, even when he may in fact not be loved by everybody in return. God demands this kind of love from us because this is His own way: «For He marketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good». -Remember the words of Christ on the Cross: «Father, forgive them». Will you be able to repeat these words?
